Quíbor: a dialogue between tradition and contemporary design
Quíbor was born as a bridge between Venezuelan artisanal tradition and the demands of contemporary design. The project (which began as an Industrial Design thesis at the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas developed by Juan Cortizo, under the mentorship of Jorge Wahbeh) highlights the value of wood, a material that has served as a medium for cultural expression across generations, bringing together designers and artisans to explore new forms and functions.
Reinterpretation of Traditional Techniques
Rooted in collaboration, the essence of "Quíbor" lies in the adaptation of artisanal techniques. Practices such as hand-carving, marquetry, and dovetail joints, native to the carpentry of Quíbor and Guadalupe, are reimagined from a product-design perspective that incorporates technology. This approach results in pieces that fuse tradition and innovation, paying homage to their roots while embracing a contemporary vision.
Partnership with Communities
Beyond objects, Quíbor seeks to establish a sustainable development model. The initiative empowers Venezuelan craftsmanship to find new avenues for growth through industrial design, generating high-value-added products. This effort counteracts the impact of mass-produced imitation crafts, which have displaced authentic artisanal work in the market, affecting local creators. By integrating innovation, the project not only revitalizes artisanal production but also delivers economic and social benefits to the communities involved.
Innovation and Added Value
Quibor stands out for boldly merging artisanal tradition with industrial design. Each piece transcends functionality, becoming a reflection of the cultural heritage of Lara State’s craftsmanship. The use of locally sourced woods, worked with traditional techniques, adds authenticity, while collaboration with artisans guarantees exceptional quality.
Additionally, the integration of technology—such as JBL speakers and hemp-fiber cables woven with macramé—enhances both aesthetic and functional experiences. Creative solutions, like the modernization of marquetry and the design of lamps that modulate light, reflect a commitment to innovation. The Rudy speakers exemplify this philosophy, combining unique patterns with a design adapted to modern functionality.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility
The project adopts a conscious approach to production. From the use of sustainable woods to active collaboration with artisans, Quíbor prioritizes respect for the environment and community development.
This commitment preserves traditional techniques while encouraging their transmission to new generations, promoting a responsible production model.
