JUAN CORTIZO
Juan Cortizo (Caracas, 2002) is a Venezuelan industrial designer who graduated from the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas in February 2024. Quíbor originated as his undergraduate thesis under the guidance of Professor Jorge Wahbeh.
When discussing the research process that preceded the development of these products, he recalls two key moments: a visit to the *Museo Antropológico de Quíbor, where he discovered the richness of ancestral Indigenous craftsmanship, and a visit to a carpentry workshop in the town of Guadalupe, where he observed a bowl crafted using the *taracea* (marquetry) technique, identifying its acoustic potential.

ORIGIN OF QUIBOR
The artisans Edgar Orta, Eguita Orta, and Isidro Orta, a family of carpenters based in Guadalupe and the primary collaborators of the Quibor project.
Through Quibor, master carpenters from Guadalupe reinterpret traditional techniques such as hand-carving, marquetry, and juntas chinas (dovetail joints), adapting them to the needs and uses of modern life.
This project not only revitalizes the artisanal legacy of these communities but also explores new economic opportunities by integrating contemporary design with tradition, creating functional pieces that preserve their cultural identity.
In April 2025, the project reaches a new milestone with its presentation at Milan’s Salone Satellite, a major international showcase for emerging design.
